The Plot

The book begins with Danny meeting Lance at a frat party, where Lance is instantly attracted to Danny's feminine side. Danny agrees to be Lance's first man-on-man experiment, but soon realizes that Lance is not ready to admit his feelings for him or come out as gay or bisexual. Lance struggles with his internalized homophobia and his fear of losing his chance to play in the NFL if anyone finds out about his secret. He pushes Danny away, but can't forget him.

Life sends Danny and Lance in different directions, each of them focused on his respective Plan A. Danny moves to New York to pursue his career as a fashion designer, while Lance transfers to another college to play football. They lose contact for four years, until they meet again by chance at a bar. They rekindle their passion, but also face new challenges. Danny wants Lance to be proud of him and their relationship, while Lance wants Danny to tone down his flamboyance and be more discreet. They have to decide if they can compromise their plans for each other, or if they are better off apart.

The Characters

Danny is a confident and outspoken guy who loves to express himself through his clothes, makeup, and hair. He is not afraid to be himself, even if that means being different from others. He is also kind-hearted, loyal, and supportive of his friends. He has a passion for fashion design and hopes to make it big in New York. He falls hard for Lance, but also respects himself enough to not settle for less than he deserves.

Lance is a talented and ambitious football player who has always dreamed of playing in the NFL. He is also handsome, charming, and popular with women. He has never questioned his sexuality until he meets Danny, who awakens feelings he never knew he had. He is conflicted and scared of losing everything he has worked for if he comes out. He cares for Danny, but also hurts him with his denial and rejection.

Some of the secondary characters who influence the story are:

  • Brad, Danny's best friend and roommate, who is also gay and supportive of Danny's relationship with Lance.

  • Travis, Lance's best friend and teammate, who is also gay and in the closet. He helps Lance to accept his sexuality and encourages him to go after Danny.

  • Becky, Lance's ex-girlfriend, who is still in love with him and tries to get him back.

  • Greg, Danny's boss and mentor, who gives him a chance to work as a fashion designer and supports his career.

The Themes

One of the main themes of the book is gay for you, which is a trope that involves a character who identifies as straight falling in love with someone of the same sex. The book explores how Lance deals with his attraction to Danny and how it affects his identity and his life. The book shows the challenges and benefits of this trope, such as the confusion, denial, fear, guilt, excitement, discovery, and acceptance that Lance experiences. The book also shows how Danny reacts to being Lance's first and only male lover, and how he copes with Lance's uncertainty and insecurity.

Another theme of the book is coming out, which is the process of revealing one's sexual orientation to others. The book portrays the difficulties and rewards of coming out as gay or bisexual, especially for someone like Lance who has a lot to lose if he does. The book shows the different reactions that Lance faces from his family, friends, teammates, coaches, and fans when he decides to come out. The book also shows how Danny supports Lance through his coming out journey, and how he deals with his own fears of being rejected or discriminated against because of his sexuality.

A third theme of the book is self-acceptance, which is the ability to accept oneself as one is. The book illustrates the importance of self-acceptance for both Danny and Lance, who have to overcome their own insecurities and doubts about themselves and their relationship. The book shows how Danny learns to love himself for his flamboyant and snarky personality, and how he helps Lance to do the same for his gay or bisexual identity. The book also shows how Lance learns to love Danny for who he is, and not for who he wants him to be.

A fourth theme of the book is dreams and goals, which are the aspirations that one has for one's future. The book depicts the conflict between pursuing one's dreams and goals and being true to oneself and one's partner. The book shows how Danny and Lance have different plans for their lives, and how they have to decide if they can fit each other into them or not. The book also shows how Danny and Lance have to balance their personal and professional lives, and how they have to make sacrifices and compromises for each other.

The Writing Style

The book is written in third person point of view, alternating between Danny's and Lance's perspectives. This allows the reader to get into both characters' heads and understand their thoughts and feelings. The book has a fast-paced and engaging plot that keeps the reader hooked from start to finish. The book has a balance of drama and angst with humor and romance that makes the reader feel a range of emotions.

The dialogue in the book is realistic and witty, reflecting the characters' personalities and emotions. The dialogue also helps to develop the relationship between Danny and Lance, showing their chemistry, banter, conflict, and love. The dialogue also adds humor to the story, especially when Danny uses his sarcasm and snark to tease or challenge Lance.

The humor in the book is one of its strengths, as it lightens the mood and makes the reader laugh. The humor comes from Danny's witty remarks, Lance's reactions to Danny's antics, and some of the situations that they find themselves in. The humor also helps to contrast with some of the serious issues that the book tackles, such as homophobia, bullying, discrimination, and violence.

The Conclusion

In conclusion, Plan B by SJD Peterson is a captivating and enjoyable romance novel that explores themes such as gay for you, coming out, self-acceptance, and dreams and goals. The book has a compelling plot, likable characters, realistic dialogue, and humorous writing style that make it a pleasure to read. The book also has some emotional moments that make it touching and memorable. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes contemporary romance novels with gay or bisexual characters who face challenges but also find love.
